Hybrid Models

To start the Next step of our design we had to choose (with the help of fellow classmates) 2-4 models to create hybrid models (mixture of beginning stage study models). The models chosen for the hybrid models are the ones posted below.

From these 4 models I then came up with 3 new hybrid models:

This hybrid model is a creation of all 4 models that have been chosen. It contains the same center circle as model # 3, also a similar spiral shape as model #1. It also has the same uprising idea as model #4. While this model already has all this of the other model it also takes the inter-twining like model #2. This model was favorite by my classmates due to the accommodation of the site.

Unlike the hybrid model above this model is only the mixture of two models which is model #1 and 2. This model is based more on the barbershop than anything else. For this model I used barber clips and a barber pick-comb to create this twisted object. Then I took the idea from model # 1, which was the race of materials and fused it with the twist already created by the comb and clips.

This last model is based more on models # 1, 3 & 4. This has the same view through views as model #3 and spirals as model #1. It also has some similarities to model # 4. This was my favorite model; I felt it was very strong. But after re-consideration I noticed it wouldn't be the best creation for my site.
Now the step would be to further or design process into one model. Some people in my class would add on 2 one but I decided to give the next model a small piece of everything.

Concept models

My professor's asked for 9 concept study models, the project description is below.
Concept Development:  Part 2
These collages will be used to take pieces from to create small conceptual models using a variety of materials. Each concept model should have a 3”x3” base and be constructed from a wide variety of materials. Think of the material when creating these models and what it represents in your collages. If there is shade and shadow along a curve in one of your collages, perhaps this can be reflected in your three dimensional physical model in two different materials that interlock in an arc or curve that penetrates the 3”x3” base and rises above into one another.
From you collages, you will create (3) models each on a 3”x3” base for each of these collages. There will be 3 models per collage for a total of 3 collages and 9 models due for the next class.
                               Concept Collages-                           http://arch3610fall14brogers.blogspot.com/2014/10/concept-collages.html

The model that is displayed above is a model created from the ideas and thought process behind my first concept collage which was the impression of the site. When going to the site I felt like there was nothing but opportunity waiting for me. As soon as I started to look at this empty land in the center of all these other structures I thought this can be a powerful project.  On my collage there is a pair of hands creating a triangular form which hold the image of a plant growing through concrete. From there I tried to portray a view seeing an image but can change from different perspectives, which is why I created different openings showing partial pieces of other openings to create the idea of different perspectives.

This model came from the actual orientation of the site how there’s all these structures around and the site lies in the center. I tried to use two different materials to show that our site can be like a nucleus to the area. I used the mesh to represent the existing buildings and I used a plastic material to show the uprising of different ideas. I wanted to show that it can be the missing piece of the community while having its own feel.

This model is very similar to the one posted above, it is a model which was also created on the orientation of the site but instead of it being flat I created a more dynamic model. I tried to show how my ideas are going different directions and the possibilities for the site are endless. The mesh shows my thought process and contains different materials in the mesh to show the eruption of ideas while the paper material shows the surrounding structures. One emotion that I felt when I got to the site was a sense of enclosure which is why I made the mesh come above the paper material to bring out the views of the seaport area.

The model above is a model that represents the second collage which was based on our interpretation of the word edge. One of my interpretations is to have a “slight edge on someone”. So there for I bonded two materials together making one more dominant than the other.

Another interpretation of the word edge is to “reach a limit” to reach the edge. On the college I have a picture of a champagne bottle; in the model I tried to express the same thing. I tried to have all these different materials (rubber bands and push pins) out of a cylindrical object.  I wanted to try and recreate the action of a shaken champagne bottle.

Edge can also be defined as the start of something such as “the edge of the war” or “the edge of a race”. On my collage I used the image of a starting line of a footrace. So in this model I used different materials that follow the same oath to resemble the motion of a race.

This model was created based on the last collage that I made which was the program of the site. I am planning on making a community center, but not just any community center. I want to bring the community program that it doesn't already have like a pool or a barbershop or a gymnasium .One of my ideas is bringing in a barbershop, on this model I tried to represent a barbershop using different materials and shapes. I used to rectangular shapes to represent scissors, aluminum foil to represent the reflection of the mirrors and copper wire to represent the electricity being used by the machines.

Another piece of program for my community center Is a basketball gymnasium. My model represents the motion of a basketball going into the basketball rim then through the net and then repeating itself.

The last model that I created was created to represent the building typology itself which is a community center.  I created a barrier and inside I placed multiple pieces that are of the rectangular shape but contain different characteristics such as length color or texture. I wanted to represent unity of similar objects with different characteristics.

Concept Collages

This assignment asks us to make collages that represent certain questions based on the site. My site is Located along the FDR drive around Pace University.
One for your impression of the site you have selected (not images of the site)
My interpretation of the site was a center of origin for the surrounding buildings, it can be weak or it can be strong. My interpretation of the man sketching the rubble is him looking at nothing and creating something. As you see the hands with the plant growing out the concrete represent the creative thought i had when i saw the plain dull site. I am the man sketching something out of nothing. The glowing ball represents the contrast between the building being created to all its surroundings, it can compliment the surroundings and still contrast with its neighbors.
The word “Edge” you will be using  (this example is of “connection”)
When people think of edge they thing of corners and ends to shape i think of other things. The people jumping off the plane is to represent living on the edge. The champagne bottle exploding means another definition of edge when means to its limits, the bottle has passed its limit. The edge is also the start of something which is represented  the starting line in a race (represents from one edge to another). The football player represents having an edge on someone, He has the edge on his opponent as he has the lead to the end-zone.
One Collage based on the program of your project.
My Project is a Community center but not just for sports or after school but for everything. It would have a small clinic, a basketball court and pool. Also a barbershop, a center for kids ,eatery and lounge areas. This structure will have everything for the community in one convenient area.

WaterFront Presentation

This presentation is on newly revitalized waterfronts. I have chosen to chose the Seattle waterfront which is being repaired by the program "Waterfront" here are some questions that I had to answer during the presentation.

.Chose a city with a newly revitalized waterfront.
Answer the following questions with text, images and diagrams.
Why did you chose this city?
What was the waterfront used from in the history?
What caused the change at the waterfront?
What are the new uses?
What are the transportation systems and the access to the waterfront?
Is there boat or water access?
How does the waterfront attract people?
What are the amenities?
What type of retail/commercial/residential are at the waterfront?
What type of public spaces are there?
Who uses these spaces?
What is successful about this waterfront development?
What is not successful about this waterfront?
